Wifedom by Anna Funder: A biography, memoir, and treatise Wifedom the story of Eileen O’Shaughnessy, George Orwell’s first wife, has been described as “simply a masterpiece” by Geraldine Brooks and “an utter triumph” by Anne Summers.

Funder pieces together Eileen’s story and exposes the tricks that left her buried – by the biographers, and by history. Drawing from Eileen’s own words she recreates the Orwell’s marriage in an intimate, inventive counter-fiction to the visionary writer and his invisible wife.

“After I took Eileen out of the box, I had a life in facts, a woman in pieces. So, she will live writing the letters she did... I know where she was when she wrote them. I know that the dishes were frozen in the sink, that she was bleeding, that he was in bed with another woman – and she knew it.”  Anna Funder.

“Electrifying… a sharp, captivating look at a complicated relationship and resurrection of a vital figure in Orwell’s life.” Kirkus Starred Review.
