14 OCTOBER 2016: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull officially opened the Turnbull Suite at Hotel Kurrajong Canberra this morning, named after him in honour of his most recent election win during the hotel’s 90th birthday year. The event was held today on Friday 14 October, with Australia’s 29th Prime Minister and the hotel’s owners from National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA) and TFE Hotels. It signified the official opening of the suite at the Heritage-listed hotel in Barton.
Guests of the suite will have the opportunity to live just as the Prime Minister would during their stay. Decked out with a few of his noted favourite things, patrons can either play Monopoly, drink a glass of 2000 Canberra Federation Red Magnum Wine, listen to Roxanne by The Police or read Breakfast With Beaverbrook by by Ann Moyal in the newly named suite.
“It was an honour to have our Prime Minister officially open the Turnbull Suite today,” said TFE Hotels CEO Rachel Argaman. “As it was the home to Prime Minister Ben Chifley for 11 years, Hotel Kurrajong has long held a place at the heart of Australian politians.”
The official opening coincides with the hotel celebrating its 90th anniversary and provided a platform to look back at the many significant eras of the building. The hotel was built in 1926, the same year as Old Parliament House by the same designer, Commonwealth Chief Architect, John Smith Murdoch. It then hosted parliamentary officials, guests and press for the opening of Parliament House in 1927 and continued as a residence for Members of Parliament, their families, public servants, guests and visitors for years to come.
“This year has been a momentous year for Hotel Kurrajong Canberra, the first in our TFE Hotels Collection brand portfolio,” Ms Argaman said. “It is now a delightfully renovated landmark that references a time when personal style reigned. It is again etching a place in the nation’s psyche, this time as a contemporary, sophisticated getaway.”
In December 2014 the Heritage-listed building reopened after being fully refurbished with a distinct Art Deco theme, via a joint venture between its owners National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA) and TFE Hotels, who operate it today.
Visitors to the hotel will be struck by the 1920’s-inspired decor and hospitality from the moment they arrive. The grand ballroom, the cosy fireplace, the library stocked with historic literature and photographs along the hallways imbue a sense of the building’s history.
The pavilion-style buildings with their pretty terrace gardens, dotted with warming fire pits and garden furniture for outdoor drinks, are nestled among trees between Lake Burley Griffin and Capital Hill, having lived various incarnations as a boarding house and hotel school since first opening as a hotel in 1926, then called Hostel Number 2.
The hotel’s 147 rooms houses 26 in the heritage wing and include four executive suites, four balcony rooms and eight terrace rooms.
