Enjoying an Easter getaway that won’t break the bank is easier than you think. We’ve got you covered with some free and inexpensive ideas... and, of course, some great places to stay!

Get in touch with history 

With a picturesque harbour and historic charm, Hobart is a great place to explore. There’s no better place to get lost in than the winding streets of Battery Point, with its quaint colonial cottages and pretty gardens. It’s an easy walk from here to Constitution Dock which bustles with restaurants, galleries and other attractions. 

Fill your picnic basket at Salamanca Market on Easter Saturday. Held every Saturday, it is one of Hobart’s most popular attractions, with a huge range of locally produced food, clothing, homewares, art and craft.

Follow the waterfront to Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum, 200 metres from where Mawson’s expedition sailed for Antarctica in 1911. It offers a fascinating insight into the daily lives of the expeditioners who spent two winters living and working in the windiest place on earth.

Learn about Tasmania’s convict history at Hobart Convict Penitentiary, taking the ghost tour after dark if you dare. Finish your Easter getaway by driving to the summit of Mount Wellington for spectacular city views. If you don’t have your own transport, the Explorer Bus will take you there.

A stay at Vibe Hotel Hobart or Travelodge Hotel Hobart puts you in walking distance to some of Hobart’s best attractions like Mount Wellington, the Salamanca Markets, and the city’s wine bars and art galleries are close by, while Hobart’s Airport is just a short drive away. 

Family-friendly Fun

For quintessential family fun, Adelaide has it in spades. Take the tram to seaside Glenelg with its great shops, cafés and historic ambience. Adelaide has many lovely beaches with grassed areas to play and picnic. Semaphore has a water park and carousel. All are great for watching the sunset over the water.

Grab the kids and do a self-guided walking tour around historic Port Adelaide and look out for wild dolphins – more than 30 regularly hang out in the river here. There aren’t many cities in the world lucky enough to have wild dolphins! 

Let the kids burn off energy on the Children’s Storybook Trail at Carrick Hill. On this free bush trail, they can climb, touch, feel and jump their way through 12 classic tales. Highlights include Frog on a Log from Graeme Base’s book, The Water Hole, a Hobbit house, fairy house, and scenes from The Jungle Book and Charlotte’s Web.

There’s more interactive fun at Adelaide Gaol Museum, where they can have a go at unpicking the locks and feel what it was like to wear handcuffs and leg irons. 

While Adelaide has lots of great restaurants, there’s more pleasure in picking up some goodies from Adelaide Central Market and taking them back to Adina Apartment Hotel Adelaide Treasury to whip up something delicious. Blessed With Beaches

Apart from its awesome beaches, Perth’s greatest asset is Kings Park, a massive green space with children’s play areas, barbecues, cafés and spectacular views. Stroll among the treetops on the Federation Walkway, enjoying indigenous artwork along the way.

Boola Bardip means ‘many stories’ in the local indigenous language and WA Museum Boola Bardip is certainly a place to share in Western Australia’s many stories. This visually striking museum opened only a few years ago; entry is free.

A hop, step and jump from downtown Perth, the long white-sand beach at Scarborough makes for a perfect Easter getaway. The beach is patrolled on weekends and public holidays from October to April. It’s a great place to catch a wave or learn to surf. Grab some takeaway fish and chips, and enjoy the foreshore facilities including lagoon-style pool and  whale-themed playground.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly beach getaway close to the city stay at Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough. The beachfront hotel is home to a lagoon style pool with ocean views, tennis courts, and a fully equipped games room the kids will love.

A Brisbane Adventure 

There’s no need to break the bank when keeping kids entertained in Brisbane. Drive 30 minutes from the city centre to Daisy Hill Koala Centre where there’s a large outdoor enclosure with several interactive displays. You won’t be able to cuddle a koala here, but you can get a great view of the wildlife. 

If it’s a hot or rainy day, Brisbane city is home to a number of interactive museums and art galleries that the kids will love. From The Children’s Art Centre at Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art to Queensland Museum’s Discovery Centre and Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, discover something new and exciting. 

And if you’re keen to get out in the open-air, get on two wheels and explore the city on bike. Afterwards cool off with a dip at Streets Beach and Aquativity Centre on South Bank.
