Ralph D’Souza, the General Manager of Vibe Hotel Darwin Waterfront gives us the inside scoop on the best sights in Darwin.
The best place to go for date night?
“Begin your night at the Deck Chair Cinema, an outdoor cinema on the edge of Darwin Harbour.” Relax and recline on your deck chair and watch the sun set over the sea as the movie begins.
After the movie, head to Pee Wee’s at the point for dinner. “Don’t let the name put you off, this stunning waterfront restaurant is perfect for spoiling your loved one.”
Awarded the NT Gold Plate Award for the best restaurant of the year 2015, you can enjoy dishes like Coconut Crusted Crocodile Tail, Hot & Sour Pork Cheek and Oven Baked Wild Caught NT Saltwater Barramundi.
The café with the coolest atmosphere?
“For the best coffee in Darwin, you need to check out Laneway Speciality Coffee. Quirky and hip atmosphere with great café meals and even better service.” With an onsite pastry chef, they are notorious for their selection of sweet treats including “Bronuts” (a brioche donut). With flavours such as lemon meringue and Nutella, it will be hard to choose just one!
(As a side note, they are also gluten free and dairy free friendly.)
What’s a Darwin must try specialty?
For a real taste of the territory, you have to try Darwin’s exotic flavours of kangaroo, crocodile and emu at Magic Wok.
“Choose your meat, choose your veggies, choose your sauce and noodles, and let the chef’s do the rest! The guys at Magic Wok can make any combo taste like an Asian Australian fusion dream. Try kangaroo with black bean sauce for a pleasant surprise – the best stir fry I have ever tasted.”
Another Territorian speciality is Mary’s Laksa at the Parap Markets that run every Saturday. “The queue may be long but I can assure you it is worth it, PM Malcom Turnbull has even turned up for a bowl!
Best place for a beer?
“For a fun vibe, great feed and a massive selection of beer, my pick is Ducks Nuts. This place comes alive on Friday and Saturday nights with live music and a cool crowd.” The Ducks also offers all-day breakfast – perfect for a late start.
Best views in town?
“Mindil Beach has the best views in Darwin, the sunsets from the beach are stunning.” If you’ve ever seen a photo of a Darwin sunset, chances are it was taken at Mindil Beach. Grab some take-away and sit by the water to enjoy the gorgeous view.
