When it's cooling down outside, there's nothing better than waking up late, throwing on five layers of clothes and heading out for brunch. We've rounded up the top brunch spots in Melbourne that have delicious coffee and a warm ambience.

Pillar of Salt

Big old courtyard? Check. Impeccable baked goods? Yes, siree. Adorable café dog called Henry? Also present. Need we say more?

Jardin Tan

Shannon Bennet answers all our summer day desires with his French-Vietnamese café in the middle of South Yarra’s beautiful botanic gardens. Opt for something more mainstream with the coconut porridge or go all out adventurous with the bahn xeo – a turmeric, mung bean and coconut pancake served with pork and prawn.

Top Paddock

This Richmond café is famous for two things: the chilli scrambled eggs and the impossibly fluffy blueberry and ricotta hotcakes. Take a friend, share both and soak up the Melbourne sunshine at one of the coveted outdoor tables.

Kanteen

On the banks of the Yarra and serving great coffee, this little café is the perfect pit stop on your morning walk. The menu constantly changes to make the most of seasonal ingredients so expect all sorts of combinations that you wish you’d discovered sooner, like sweet potato and pulled pork hash or baked beans topped with Parmesan, poached egg and feta.

The Kettle Black

This is the terrace house café of your dreams: bright, airy and serving up food and drink that’s as pretty as it is tasty. If you’re in the mood, kick things off with a Wasabi Bloody Mary or a Gin and Green Juice before moving on to your morning’s solids.

Cowderoy's Dairy

If you’re looking for a casual brunch spot you can roll into with the kids, dog and unruly hair, this is it. It’s next to Jacoby Reserve in St Kilda West, provides plenty of sunny outdoor tables and serves up good honest food all morning long.

Higher Ground

In a heritage-listed former powerhouse, this all-day dining destination has a chic industrial look with exposed brickwork and soaring cathedral-like ceilings. The creative menu features brunch specials such as Sambal Scrambled Eggs with cauliflower, coconut and roasted chilli, and Waffles with macadamia, charred pineapple and gingerbread cream.

Rustica Bakery Café; an

With high ceilings and large windows overlooking Chapel Street, this light-filled bakery/café makes all its bread and pastries in-house. Watch the bakers, pastry chefs and chefs at work behind glass panels in the busy wholesale kitchen and be sure to wear stretchy pants to make room for the delicacies they produce.

When it comes to accommodation in Melbourne, TFE Hotels has you covered... whether you're after colourful and quirky (at Quincy Melbourne); an elegant heritage hotel (The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins or Rendezvous Hotel Melbourne); a gorgeous hotel that punches above its weight with views (Vibe Hotel Melbourne) or a clean, green stay (Adina Melbourne Southbank), there's plenty to choose from.
