From lively Northbridge to trendy Subiaco and the laneways of Fremantle, Perth’s dining scene is a feast of culinary experiences waiting to be savoured. There’s more Italian deliciousness on the menu at Vin Populi in Fremantle’s historic West End precinct. The charcuterie here is impressive and there’s a great list of Italian, natural and organic wines. The chalkboard menu is updated daily to take account of available produce and the fishermen’s catch.
For some of the best pasta in Perth, if not the country, check out Lulu La Delizia, a cosy osteria showcasing the delights of Friuli and the Venetian spice route. You’re also guaranteed to love the food at Cherubino City Cellar, where the menu highlights the best of seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.
If you’re still craving a taste of Italy, head to Il Lido, an Italian-inspired espresso bar and restaurant in a 1930s art deco cabaret hall on Cottesloe Beach. And if you still haven’t had your fill of Italian, don’t miss Casa Casa, a neighbourhood wine bar in Mount Hawthorn with themed monthly menus and a dinner club program featuring guest chefs.
For a swanky beachside lunch, Shorehouse is the place to go. Another favourite is Odyssea, with fabulous views of City Beach, while further up the coastline at Scarborough, Straits Café in the Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough also has brilliant views.
Highlighting Western Australia’s abundant seafood, including freshly shucked Albany rock oysters, Madalena’s is the place to go in south Fremantle. This downstairs restaurant with upstairs bar has all the ambience of a boteco, a small bar like you might find in Sao Paulo, the Brazilian city where the owners met.
Northbridge abounds with restaurants and bars. One of the coolest is Lucky Chan’s with its eclectic décor and enticing menu of Asian fusion dishes including bao buns, noodles and handmade dumplings. Kick back before dinner with a cocktail in the rooftop bar.
In the basement of Perth’s historic State Buildings, Long Chim is inspired by Thai street food, served with a contemporary edge as you enjoy sweeping views of the Swan River. Will St, the venture of esteemed international chef Will Meyrick, is drawing diners to Leederville with its inspired menu of Asian and Indian flavours, while elsewhere in Leederville, Shesh Besh, is popular for its Middle Eastern and Mediteranean food.
For a more down to earth experience, head to Coogee Common, which is centred around the 120-year-old Coogee Hotel overlooking Coogee Beach. Its extensive gardens produce much of the food on the menu. Even the cocktails are created with fresh botanicals from the garden. After enjoying the degustation menu, pop into the farm shop selling preserves, local crafts and surplus from the garden.
And finally for wow factor, it’s hard to beat Storehouse Subiaco, the award-winning rooftop restaurant and bar on top of the Vibe Hotel Subiaco Perth. As well as knockout views and bespoke cocktails, it showcases the best of Western Australia’s fine produce in contemporary Australian dishes.
